Matching Methodology

When a client submits a matter intake, STX.ESQ proposes up to five eligible attorneys. Selection is neutral, disclosed, and based on objective criteria — not pay-to-rank, ratings, reviews, or any opaque scoring.

Who is eligible

For a given intake (state + practice area), an attorney is eligible only if all of the following are true at the moment of routing:
  • Status is VERIFIED (eight-layer verification complete and unlapsed).
  • Active Credential subscription (or active founding-beta access).
  • At least 1 lead credit in their balance.
  • Accepting Intakes toggle is ON in their settings.
  • Bar admitted in the requested state.
  • Listed practice area matches the intake's practice area.

How candidates are ordered

Eligible candidates are ordered by a transparent rotation score that prefers attorneys who have received fewer recent proposals, breaking ties by stable hash so the same intake produces the same ordering on retry. The Practice Tools subscription is an add-on for software access only and never affects allocation order.

What happens on delivery

For each delivered proposal we atomically consume one lead credit and write an append-only lead_receipts row capturing the reasoning codes, the matched attorney, and the cycle anchor. Receipts are immutable and auditable.

What never happens

  • No pay-to-rank, no auctioned placement, no bidding for leads.
  • No client ratings or reviews influencing matching.
  • No referral fees, no contingency fees, no revenue share.
  • Tools tier does not affect eligibility or order — it's a software add-on.
