Bar License Verification
Each bar admission is verified against the issuing state bar's records before publication, and re-verified at least annually. A lapsed, suspended, or disbarred status downgrades the attorney's listing immediately.
Verification
Every attorney on STX.ESQ clears the same eight verification layers before publication — and stays under continuous monitoring afterward. A credential that lapses visibly degrades; it does not silently persist.
Each bar admission is verified against the issuing state bar's records before publication, and re-verified at least annually. A lapsed, suspended, or disbarred status downgrades the attorney's listing immediately.
We screen state bar disciplinary records — public reprimands, suspensions, disbarments, and pending complaints — at onboarding and on a scheduled re-check cadence. Findings trigger admin review before the attorney can remain listed.
We require an active malpractice declaration page on file, with policy number, carrier, limits, and effective dates. Coverage expiry generates automated alerts and a verified lapse downgrades the credential.
Attorneys maintain a structured list of declared conflicts — adverse parties, prior representations, and barred industries. Every incoming intake is checked against that list before delivery, and the result is preserved for the attorney's own conflicts call.
Client intakes are screened for Customer Identification Program, sanctions, and politically exposed person matches before any attorney sees them. We do not surface intakes that fail screening.
Listings are gated to states where the attorney is admitted in good standing, and matter routing respects each state's bar advertising rules. We do not route work into jurisdictions where the attorney is not authorized to practice.
Intake content is encrypted in transit and at rest, and is only released to an attorney after the client consents to share with that specific attorney. Clients retain visibility into who has access.
Every verification event — approval, rejection, document review, re-screen, lapse — is written to an append-only audit log keyed to the attorney. The log is the source of truth for credential status at any point in time.
Monitoring
Verification at onboarding is the start, not the end. Three monitoring loops run on the credential after publication:
Insurance expiry alerts
Each malpractice policy on file is monitored against its expiry date. Approaching expiry triggers admin and attorney alerts; an expired policy automatically downgrades the credential to Verification Lapsed until renewed coverage is on file.
Scheduled disciplinary re-screens
Every verified attorney is enqueued for a recurring disciplinary re-screen. A new finding pulls them into the admin review queue and pauses new intakes until cleared.
Annual bar re-verification
Bar admissions are re-verified against state-bar records at least once a year. Failure to re-verify downgrades the credential to Verification Lapsed; the listing is removed from directory routing until restored.
Auditability
Every verification event is written to an append-only audit log. Bitcoin anchoring of this log — making each verification independently checkable against the Bitcoin blockchain — is in development and will be announced when live.
Verification is free during the beta. Founding members receive permanent founding recognition on their verified credential and 5 promotional lead credits on approval.
